Roll Grinder Vibration Inspection

Vibremo engineers have extensive experience characterising and solving vibration and chatter issues on roll grinder machines in the steel and aluminium industries.

Grinders in the rolled metals industry

Grinding machines in the aluminium and steel industries prepare rolls for use in rolling mills that produce sheet metal, supplying many of the world’s biggest industries. It’s vital that the produced rolls have an excellent surface finish, free of any chatter marks, in order to meet the high quality standards required in industries such as automotive manufacturing and renewable energy.

A roll marked by chatter vibration, and sent from the grinder to the mill, could result in quality issues on the finished strip. This can lead to coils being rejected by the customer, resulting in significant financial loss for the metal producer. On top of this, further operating time and energy is required to fix the cause of the problem and reproduce the coils with a satisfactory finish.

Preventing excessive roll grinder vibration results in increased productivity and a more eco-friendly, sustainable and efficient operation for the rolled metal producer.

How can Vibremo help?

roll grinder

Vibremo engineers have extensive experience performing vibration inspections on roll grinders in the UK, Europe, USA and further afield. We have the technological capability and expertise to identify and solve your roll grinder vibration problems. These problems can be caused by a structural weakness in any of the following:

  • Wheel head

  • Head stock steady

  • Tail stock steady

  • Wheel spindle

Or by a forced vibration from (amongst others):

  • Bearing defects

  • Gearing

  • Chain problems

  • Belt vibrations

Vibremo also offer regular ‘health-checks’ on roll grinders. These can be every 3 to 6 months and allow for any potential future vibration or chatter issues to be identified before they begin to cause quality issues on the roll and eventually the mill. We also can perform PAT and FAT testing for grinding machines as well as full roll grinder fingerprinting.

Our analysis allows for the best wheel and roll speeds to be identified and for the key natural frequencies and resonances of the grinder to be measured, recorded and monitored over time.
